Evaluating ambiguous random variables from Choquet to maxmin expected utility

چکیده

We introduce a new theory of belief revision under ambiguity. It is recursive (random variables are evaluated by backward induction) and consequentialist (the conditional expectation any random variable depends only on the values attains conditioning event). Agents experience no change in preferences but sensitive to timing resolution uncertainty. provide three main theorems: first characterizes our rule relates it standard Bayesian updating; others show that dynamic behavior an agent who adopts maxmin expected utility with arbitrary set priors.

Ambiguous events and maxmin expected utility

1 We study the properties associated to various de…nitions of ambiguity ([8], [9], [18] and [23]) in the context of Maximin Expected Utility (MEU). We show that each de…nition of unambiguous events produces certain restrictions on the set of priors, and completely characterize each de…nition in terms of the properties it imposes on the MEU functional. We apply our results to two open problems. ...

Choquet Expected Utility

Recent developments in the theory of choice under uncertainty and risk yield a pessimistic decision theory that replaces the classical expected utility criterion with a Choquet expectation that accentuates the likelihood of the least favorable outcomes. A parallel theory has recently emerged in the literature on risk assessment. It is shown that a general form of pessimistic portfolio optimizat...

Purely subjective Maxmin Expected Utility

The Maxmin Expected Utility decision rule suggests that the decision maker can be characterized by a utility function and a set of prior probabilities, such that the chosen act maximizes the minimal expected utility, where the minimum is taken over the priors in the set. Gilboa and Schmeidler axiomatized the maxmin decision rule in an environment where acts map states of nature into simple lott...

Dynamically Consistent α–Maxmin Expected Utility∗

The α–maxmin model is a prominent example of preferences under Knightian uncertainty as it allows to distinguish ambiguity and ambiguity attitude. These preferences are dynamically inconsistent for nontrivial versions of α. In this paper, we derive a recursive, dynamically consistent version of the α–maxmin model. In the continuous–time limit, the resulting dynamic utility function can be repre...

Maxmin Weighted Expected Utility: A Simpler Characterization∗

Chateauneuf and Faro [3] axiomatize a weighted version of maxmin expected utility over acts with nonnegative utilities, where weights are represented by a confidence function. We argue that their representation is only one of many possible, and we axiomatize a more natural form of maxmin weighted expected utility. We also provide stronger uniqueness results.
